Snapshots invalid after expanding disk on ESX

$

While trying to expand the hard drive of our virtual Ubuntu Server I accidentally it.

Since its field of service was expanded I wanted to expand the disk size from 10 GB to 50 GB  using "vmkfstools".

Well, to be sure, I shut down the Server and tried to used the command on the latest Snapshot, "UbuntuServer-000008.vmdk".

I got an error that snapshots can't be expanded I used the command on the shut down "UbuntuServer.vmdk" and it worked.

So I powered up the VM and got an error "The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created (18)" and realized, I did something stupid...

Googling the error message I found this article, suggesting to repair the CIDs and parent CIDs in the VMDK-Files of the initial HD and snapshots, however, the CIDs of my server form an unbroken chain.

In the Log file I found this entry:

So the ESX can't load the snapshot because the capacity has been changed.

Searching with the new information I found this article, stating the the VMDK-files must be changed.

But how do I know which values I need to use? It isn't stated how the values are calculated...

How do I get my Virtual Machine back into a workable state?

Ошибка разовая, или носит регулярный характер?

Обычно связана с ошибками памяти или контроллера памяти.

Hello

This will be isolation problem. Mostly your software saves attachements into some directory which is in your sandbox and therefore is not accessible in other applications (applications not virtualized and not running in virtual buble).

Can you, please, check which directory are your attachements stored in? What's exact path?

Have a nice day,

Re: suspend VM

When you suspend a virtual machine, a file with a .vmss extension is created. This file contains the entire state of the virtual machine. When you resume the virtual machine, its state is restored from the .vmss file.

Hi Manickam,

Great to hear that you finally managed to reopen the disks. One more thing I want to stress with respect to this. The problem is not that you actually have not dismounted the disk properly, to me it seems that the vstor driver does that properly, but that you did not VixDiskLib_Close(...) the disks properly. That is VixDiskLib_CheckRepair(...) should always be your friend when you have to reckon with disks that have not been closed properly for any reason.

Here is wishing happy coding ;-)

Hi Pankaj,

Congratulations on clearing the exam. Also I would require help on knowing the following information:

1> How many days does it take to receive the confirmation once you have appeared for the exam. I am aware it is 15 days but in some cases it has been more than this time period.

2> What are the study resources that you have used for preparing for the certification exam? particularly which vCAT documentation i.e. ver 2 or ver 3 from exam preparation point of view.

Nitin

Hi Bo,

I see that in the procedure the key is generated at 1024. to generate the certificate I'm trying to implement, I used the VMware kb :

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2034833

in this procedure, it set the encryption at 2048. which is good because our internal CA doesn't generate certs below 2048.

otherwise the format is also RSA.

might this be the problem?

thank you

Eric

I don't think cloning the vCenter is a good idea, there is potential for data corruption when to vCenters are trying to access the same database.

Would recommend a much simpler way, shut down your vCenter (Its not critical to your infrastructure), connect directly to one of your already patched hosts with vSphere Client, register and power on the vCenter VM, connect to the vCenter VM and continue patching.

Hi Sophia,

Thanks for your reply.

The snapshot was from last night, just 30 minutes before posting the question here as I was trying out some new software and wanted a clean roll back.

I do not think the host has VT capabilities as the CPU is an intel atom D510. I am happy that it actually runs the beta and it is no problem for me that it doesn't want to run VMs in long mode.

The XP guest is old and was created with workstation 5 or so, before upgrading this host to the beta, the host was running workstation 7.

Hope this helps,

Disable wtmp log

$

Hi folks,

We have a monitoring software that connects to our ESX hosts in a rate that makes the wtmp log explode.

It is my understanding that you can delete the wtmp file, and it won't be recreated until the host is booted. Is there any way to completely disable the file, or somehow limit it in size?
